- What is AI visibility?
- More people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude for recommendations instead of searching Google. AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, those assistants mention your brand when someone asks about your category. It is to AI answers what rankings are to search results.
- What does an AI visibility tool do?
- An AI visibility tool runs a set of prompts your customers would ask through AI assistants on a schedule, then records whether your brand is mentioned, where it appears, how it is described and which sources are cited. Over time that shows whether your AI search visibility is growing, and which competitors are winning the answers you want.
- Is this the same as GEO or AEO?
- Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) are the work of improving how AI assistants talk about you. An AI visibility tracker is how you measure that work. PromptRankings shows where you stand and which cited pages to target, so you can tell whether your GEO efforts are paying off.
- Do the results match what I see in ChatGPT?
- Not always. We measure answers from the official APIs with web search enabled, which is the closest repeatable equivalent to the apps, but personalisation, memory and app-specific features can change what an individual user sees. That is also why we sample each prompt more than once and report rates rather than single answers.
- Which AI assistants do you track?
- ChatGPT tracking works today. Gemini, Perplexity and Claude are being added one at a time, each through its official API.
- How much does self-hosting cost?
- The software is free. You pay the AI providers for the queries you run. Tracking 50 prompts once a week across all four engines comes to roughly $10 a month at current API prices.
- How is this different from Profound, Peec AI or Otterly?
- PromptRankings is an open source AI visibility tool that can run on your own infrastructure with your own keys, so the cost is a fraction of a hosted tool and you can check exactly how each metric is calculated. The hosted version will be priced for small teams and agencies rather than enterprise budgets.
